Summer has a way of pulling us back into community. Backyard dinners, longer evenings, family reunions — we naturally slow down and reconnect. But there’s a leadership lesson hiding in that seasonal shift: the same trust that holds families and friendships together is what holds high-performing teams together.
Trust isn’t handed to us. It’s built — deliberately, one honest conversation at a time. And right now, most workplaces are running a trust deficit. According to the Gallup Organization, more than 75% of employees say they don’t trust that their direct managers care about their well-being or growth. That’s not a communication gap — it’s a connection gap.
The good news: connection and trust are practices, not personality traits. Two things build connection and trust fastest.
1. Kindness, vulnerability, good intentions. Leaders who occasionally let their guard down — who share a story of a misstep, ask more than they tell, stay curious — give their teams permission to relax and show up as real people, not polished performers.
2. Truth, spoken respectfully. Getting clear on what you want, need, and value — and saying it plainly — signals high standards for yourself and your relationships. It’s also, quietly, an act of self-trust. We know this is not easy work but there’s a huge ROI, starting with the ability to create a Psychologically Safe environment.
Just as fractured trust is a leading factor in relationship breakdowns at home (the Institute for Family Studies cites it as a primary driver in marriage failure), it’s the quiet variable behind disengaged, underperforming teams at work. Community — the kind we lean into every summer and every season — isn’t separate from leadership. It is leadership. We make it happen.
This month’s reflection: Where could there be a little more human interaction, more truth and trust on your team — or in your own life?
It always begins with you and your ability to be truthful with yourself first.
This is the work we do. Let’s chat…If this resonates.
